Background of the Study

Access to healthcare is a critical determinant of health outcomes, yet it remains highly uneven, particularly in developing regions. Socioeconomic status, particularly family income, plays a crucial role in determining an individual’s ability to access quality healthcare services (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024). Studies have shown that lower-income households face barriers such as financial constraints, lack of health insurance, and limited access to healthcare facilities (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024). These factors contribute to higher morbidity and mortality rates in impoverished communities (Usman & Bello, 2024).

In Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi State, disparities in healthcare access persist due to economic inequalities. Families with higher income levels tend to afford better healthcare services, while low-income households often rely on underfunded public healthcare facilities or traditional medicine (Olaniyan et al., 2023). The lack of empirical data on the statistical relationship between income levels and healthcare access in Kebbi State makes it difficult for policymakers to implement effective healthcare policies that bridge the gap.

This study aims to examine the statistical relationship between family income and access to healthcare in Kebbi State, providing insights into the extent of income-related disparities and potential policy recommendations.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to improve healthcare access in Nigeria, financial constraints remain a significant barrier, particularly in Kebbi State, where many families live below the poverty line (Adebayo & Tijani, 2024). The high cost of medical services, combined with a lack of health insurance coverage, limits healthcare utilization among low-income households (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024).

Although anecdotal evidence suggests that income influences healthcare access, there is a lack of statistical data quantifying this relationship in Kebbi State. Without reliable data, policymakers struggle to develop effective strategies to improve healthcare equity (Usman & Bello, 2024). This study seeks to address this gap by analyzing the statistical correlation between family income and healthcare access in Kebbi State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the relationship between family income levels and the utilization of healthcare services in Kebbi State.

2. To analyze the impact of income disparities on healthcare affordability and insurance coverage.

3. To evaluate potential policy interventions to improve healthcare access for low-income families.

Research Questions

1. How does family income influence healthcare access in Kebbi State?

2. What is the correlation between income levels and healthcare affordability?

3. What policy measures can enhance healthcare accessibility for low-income households?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant statistical relationship between family income and healthcare access in Kebbi State.

2. Low-income families experience more barriers to healthcare affordability compared to high-income households.

3. Policy interventions can improve healthcare accessibility for low-income groups.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on households in Kebbi State, analyzing the impact of income levels on healthcare access. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining accurate income data and variations in healthcare service availability across urban and rural areas.

Definitions of Terms

• Family Income: The total earnings of all members of a household, influencing economic stability and healthcare affordability.

• Healthcare Access: The ability of individuals to obtain and use medical services when needed.

• Health Insurance: A financial protection mechanism that reduces out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.
